Choosing a Roofer to Fix a Leak

We often don’t think about our roof until we have to. Especially if the system is relatively new. Yet when homeowners notice water damage or a leak- everything changes. Roof leaks from storm damage are all too common here in Jacksonville, and are often easily remedied by an experienced local contractor.

Stay Patient-

Now we can focus on finding a roofing contractor to address the situation. Remember a good roofer, or the best roofer- is going to be experiencing a high volume of calls during storm season. It’s common for a quality roofer to be days if not weeks out, before they can come give an estimate. Refer back to the leak mitigation tips suggested above… It’s almost always better to deal with a leak while you wait for the best contractor, as opposed to having an inexperienced company do the job today. A roof leak is temporary, but a bad repair is not.  

Beware of shoddy roofers-

One of the first variables to look out for is “fly by night,” or “storm chasing,” roofers. Look for a roofer that’s been in business for a while. If the company’s brand new, or has multiple different websites etc.- this could mean more potential for problems. Use your best judgement. If a company is reputable, it should feel and look that way throughout the entire process.  

Cheapest ain’t always best-

Part of a company’s prestige or reputation is often correlated with price. Normally the best roofing solutions aren’t the cheapest or “discounted.” Correctly repairing your roof is essential to the overall value of your property, quality work is priced on that need / demand. Trusted roofers have the proper insurance, permits, and licenses, and won’t cut corners to save a buck.   

Trust / Understand the Estimate-

The estimate process is “your” time, to vet, interview, and choose your roofer. Even if you have a severe roof leak; remember, the roofer is competing for your business, not the other way around! Simply trust your gut. How does the estimate process make you feel? Do have rapport with the sales rep? Have they explained everything thoroughly? DO YOU UNDERSTAND IT?

If you feel turned off, or that something is wrong with the sales pitch? It probably is. A reputable roofing contractor will have a friendly, well-trained sales rep… that makes you feel comfortable with how everything will work from start to finish.

Check Reviews-

As we know, human nature leads us to share negative feedback more often than positive. So online / Google reviews should be taken with a gain of salt. That said, a roofing contractor’s Google review page is definitely worth a look before you hire a roofer. If a contractor is consistently doing shoddy work, it will often be reflected on their review page. Google review pages can also help show if a roofer is local to your area. If the roofer doesn’t have an office within a “reasonable,” drive from your home? That’s a red flag.
