If you have a roof leak, or water coming into your home or business, this blog will discuss steps to take to get the problem resolved.
WHAT TO DO AFTER A ROOF LEAK (Jacksonville, Gainesville, Daytona Beach, Florida):
Collect / Mitigate Water Inside
First and foremost, as in any stressful situation, don’t panic. Be quick but don’t hurry. Water inside your home or business is going to cause damage to the materials it touches, so we first want to stop or contain the source of the leak. Use common sense to quickly get a container, bucket, or pan underneath the source of the leak. If the leak is mild, a towel can be used but checked frequently. Once we’ve stopped the water source from multiplying- it’s time to clean up the water that’s remaining inside. Using a mop or towels, remove as much water as possible from inside surfaces, and wring the towel over a sink (or outside) to physically remove the water. If there’s any carpet or furniture that remains wet, remove it from the home as soon as possible. If the leak was large, or was undiscovered- box fans are a cheap and effective option to dry your home and prevent mold or mildew growth afterward. Use common sense to get the house dry.
Investigate Temporary Fix Outside
After a severe storm in Florida, demand for roof estimates increases significantly. If you have water coming into your home or business, chances are you aren’t alone. Consequently, local contractors will be flooded (no pun intended) with repair and estimate requests. This is where we look at the risk / reward of a temporary fix. Climbing on a roof is dangerous, and we recommend against this if possible. There’s no leak bad enough to risk injury. That said, if the source of your leak (room) is beneath an area of roof that’s low to the ground and easily accessible- it’s reasonable to consider a temporary fix. The classic “blue tarp,” found at any local hardware store can be applied over the area of shingle damage and will normally mitigate further damage until a professional arrives.
Call a Trusted Local Roofer
Don’t stress. A roof leak after a storm is a common occurrence, and no matter how severe it can be fixed. So don’t feel rushed or under the gun. Hiring the “wrong” roofer can be significantly worse than a leak itself. Fixing your roof properly, the first time- is critically important to protecting your home’s value and safeguarding the monthly investment you make through your mortgage.
